how many pets can have at time

I was just wondering how many pets can u have at a time?and when u have a pet and you want a new one does your other one go away when u replace it?

One pet only. You can't charm a new one if you already have a pet.
To get rid of yours, find the tamer NPC near ascalon and give him your pet.
