Ok, perhaps its that she resembles my RL daughter in behavior and looks, but I absolutely adore Gwen. Go ahead, shoot me.
So, one can safely infer that Gwen survived the searing - she was last seen catching butterflies a reasonable distance away from Ascalon in the meadow.
Then of course there is Gwen's broken flute, commonly located at the spot where her mother once stood near their house in the doomed village of Ashford.
But wait, there's her red cape as well!
Is this some cruel red herring foisted upon us by ANet? Or is Gwen in hiding somewhere, waiting to be located by intrepid explorers?
Then of course is my daughters contention that Gwen is actually the main villain; after all, she seems to know about everything and is otherwise impervious to any creatures attacks in the pre-searing...
What a delicious twist of fate that would be (and how utterly ego-deflating) for the "manly and uber obsessed" to discover at last the evil genius behind all fell deeds from searing to lichhood is an otherwise precocious 14 year old girl who enjoys flowers and dancing about...
Everything Gwen.

Click and you shall be amused.
But yes, it always did strike me odd that she never helped you fight, the enemies ignored her even after they finished you off, and only talked about herself. Methinks Gwen's going to go on a quest of revenge due to the death of her parents after the searing which was why she ditched her flute in Old Ascalon and how you see her tattered cape in Kryta's beaches.
Though I'm personally annoyed by her, I do expect to see her in some future expansions and explain what really happened to Gwen.
yeah that reminded me i don't want to go back to ascalon even if we stop the charr. I mean with all the Charr corpses i have left in my wake, the air is gonna stink and the water table will be even more polluted. I think we are doing more damage to ascalon by fighting the charr then they did by dropping big crystals on it.
But then again that Charr stew sure is yummy and filling

Plus, you must admit Ascalon was pretty before it was destroyed. Let's rebuild!
...Maybe it will bring Gwen out of hiding. You know she's probably out there somewhere!

By the way, after doing a google search for Gwen I found one of them of her setting a group of dancing necros on fire. Kind of amusing!

Which is a must see if you haven't seen it.

The above links a bunch of when Gwen went a bit crazy and set things on fire.

Always wondered if there any purpose to the old gwen items found after the searing...
*SPOILER"*
Pretty sure you see her mum down in the Underworld talking to another ghost asking if they have seen her. But she is nowhere to be seen down in the UW
*SPOILER END*
So I'm pretty much sure she is still alive somewhere, maybe, just maybe
