advantage of "clean" weapons?

I've seen several requests in the trade chat for "clean" weapons. This means no modifiers I assume. I was under the impression that you could put a new modifier over an old one as many times as you want, is this not the case?

It is the case, but ussually weapons with mods cost more than non-modded ones. So if people are going to replace the mods with their own, it would be pretty pointless to pay extra.

it is the case. However most weapons (if not all) have the ability to have special modifiers on them which are ingrained - not related to any upgrades applied to the weapon. Clean would basically mean it was free from upgrades as well as inherit improvements.... like those are a bad thing

Thanks, I have another question along the same lines so I'll tack it on the end here. Can the gold/purple items be upgraded with more mods? Or is there just a better chance that they come with more mods? I got a rare fiery dragon sword of pruning and all it had was the crappy pruning mod (+dam to plants). So I can add a prefix and suffix to it, but how does that make it any better than a normal clean sword with those same upgrades?

the color of the weapon won't have any affect on your ability to upgrade it. Just slap a new upgrade on it and it will override (delete) the old one.

This thing has kind of ammused me too, because people are actually charging more for "clean" weapons (mainly fire blades), and people are actually buying them...

i think its just morons from d2 that started the "clean" thing on here, there were items you could put stuff in on d2 and once you did it they couldnt be removed, so people wanted "clean", well on here its just morons selling junk



p.s. "godly" was a weapon modifier from d2 also, you should see some of the stuff people call godly on here, its ridiculous

Clean weapons are ones that don't have any weapon upgrades added.

As far as "godly" weapons go when people ask for them, I just laugh. They're obviously just noobs if they don't actually know what is considered godly in the game. All they know is that they want it.

lolz i'm a noob too.. anyway what is the use of customising ur items? if u already customize the items is it possible to sell it to other ppl?

I always thought people who said "Godly" meant "Goldy". Kinda like people who say "Ruin" instead of "Rune".

If an item is customized it can't be used by any person but yourself. You have to keep an eye out when trading weapons to make sure some guy isn't going to try and screw you over while he's trying to get rid of his old weapon.
The +20% damage you get from the customizing is worth it though. On average, my Chaos Axe deals an extra 3 damage on every hit and for 10g you can't go wrong!

It's been my experience that color doesn't mean much other than rarity of the drop. The most I've noticed is some higher level colors (yellow over purple over blue over white) have better attribute requirements. You really need to read up on what damage a weapon can do and what modifiers it can have to make your own decision. I've seen some blue weapons that have better numbers than yellow.

How are the Diablo players who coined the term "clean" morons? It seems to me like the person who first used "clean" in Guild Wars should be the moron.

Anyways, you CAN remove socketable items from sockets. 1 Hel rune + 1 Scroll of Town Portal + socketed item in the Horadric Cube removes all items from the sockets. Clean could also mean unnamed items. I remember offering a named weapon to someone and he said, "omg nub i said clean" and I replied "the socket is empty" and he goes "omg nub u named it!"

Some people may buy the weapon for looks only, or prefer no mods if they don't need them. Such as buying a clean Storm Bow for a non-ranger class.

Some folks just don't intend to spend 50k or more for their idea of perfect modifiers, and simply want a nice, blank, low requirement/maximum damage weapon to play with.

Some folks don't want to stare at a "decreased casting time for Blood Magic (Chance: 3%)" if they're a mo/me or something. It can offend one's sense of order and style.

Clean weapons have some advantages over a modded weapon. For example, a clean weapon does non-elemental damage (like slash/pierce/blunt) whereas a modded weapon sometimes comes with elemental damage. Now, the only way to get rid of that elemental damage of a modded weapon is to get another haft that does other non-elemental stuffs like lengthen poison/bleed/weakness. Yes, a clean weapon doesn't have modifiers but some modifiers are useless if you never use what it requires (like stance). And vs classes with armor that has elemental resistance like Rangers, you're better off with a clean weapon with regular damage than a weapon with elemental damage.
