Once we have you up and running again you should set up a maintenance schedule for your system where you check for updates and run scans.

No reloading--That really should be done as a last resort of an unstable system.

I agree its pretty sad we have to take so many precautions to be online. The Internet II promises to handle these things better. But until we all make that move and it becomes affordable for the masses.. we are stuck with the skript snarsties that plague the internet. May the gnats from a thousand cammels infest their hairy nards and may their arms fall off so theres no way to scratch.

if you are careful user...u dont need to use system restore
yes...system restore helps if you mess your computer badly(like if you delete important windows system files).
but it doesnt help you when you are infected with a virus. actually it will restore the virus you removed...making things more complicate.
And i said "if you are careful user" you dont need system restore...which means if you are not careful....then perhaps you need to have system restore on

he "can" get online.
he is just having a problem(taking annoying steps) when he is trying to view the webpage
so i suspected that it might be his internet explorer problem.
that is why i suggested him to try out other browser to see if it will work..which is firefox.
remember, this was a problem William of Orange was having.

i was just trying to help him by suggesting few of my methods(which im using and had no problems)

i had exactly same problem before..but with different condition
for him, it happend while he was online
for me, it happend while i was in LAN party.
i was playing game thru LAN, but my computer didnt allow connection with my friends' computers.
so i turned norton programs off.
i tried to turn them back on after the LAN party, but it didnt.
"but" after restarting my computer couple of times and kept trying to start the program, nortons came back.

since it happend while he was online, i suggest him to do virus check online(at symantec)
according to his reply...he did virus check and his computer was clean.
so im pretty sure his computer is ok.
just need to give computer some time.

This was a page interface on the web. Norton was turned off to view the page. That disabled any protection from allowing the trojan free access. This particular trojan disables anti-virus applications to prevent its own demise. Still can be dealt with; just that it is a pain in the watoozie.

The instance you're mentioning has more to do with a recycled recurrence motive. A pain yes...but once your HD and refresh finally unhinge themselves from the connection you are ok.

side note. phineas was more pointedly disturbed that it was being discarded as something trivial when it isn't. TRUST me... he knows his stuff.... has 20+ yrs on it, not to mention there aren't many with his certifications.

I took a few college courses on computers, (all of which are now obsoleet)

Went to ITT for Electronics.. (wasnt for me)

Did local odd jobs for a few years-Always having something to do with computers.

Worked for Gateway Tech Support for awhile

Worked for DTN for their Streaming IQ (Internet Stock Quotes) for awhile

I then broke the mold of doing computer work for awhile and did landscaping and yardwork (desperate attempt to get back into shape) LOL

Worked for PayPal for awhile (teir 3 tech support) PayPal web accept buttons/IPN till they were:

Bought by eBay.. worked for eBay for awhile doing same as above except added the 'more in depth support' for eBay listings.

After my son started Kindergarten I got a reality check on life. Unfortunately for the lower class just trying to make ends meet for a family forces both parents to either have A great paying job.. or 2 jobs to make up for it. So ... I am spending a lot of time at home with my family.

I now do freelance computer tech support/building computers etc..

So I may not have the college degrees but I have the real life creds.

I hear you. College is overrated in MY opinion. I too have real life on the job expertise. But I am thinking about getting my cert's. It just looks better on a resume.

I was a CS Major, but the math is too much for me. Now I am a MIS Major. I have discovered that I hate school, including college.

I am strongly debating a complete re-install of Windows XP Pro.
I only need to burn my 1000 plus pictures of my son in order to do that.

It would almost be just as fast to do this as it would be to try countless other programs to try and remedy the situation.

My plans on re-install are...

Purchase Mcafee AntiVirus/Firewall
Intall Microsoft SP2 from a disk prior to getting online.
I'll add a password to the Admin logon rather than just having the computer boot up.
I don't care for the one year subscription that McaFee limits you to.
But oh well, gotta make money somehow.

Should I re-install Norton Systemworks?
Or is there a better option out there?

Maybe a good all in one bundle I can buy...

I'll use Firefox again, it has boosted my internet speed substantially over IE.

I agree with Zone Alarm, been using Zone Alarm Pro myself now for about a week and its just made life oh so much simpler.

As for maintaining your system, personally I'd say throw Norton Systemworks out the window. I used to use it, but its just not worth it. I switched to another program called System Mechanic Pro 5 ( http://www.iolo.com/sm/ ) and it does absolutely everything, and does it exceptionally well. I've had absolutely no problems with it since I started using it like a year ago. I also just decided to use the virus software that bundled with it (Kaspersky http://www.kaspersky.com/ ). It worked great as well, but eventually I ended up going back to Panda Antivirus. (http://www.pandasoftware.com/home/default.asp)

Also, System Mechanic Pro comes with Kaspersky Antihack with is a decent firewall, though perhaps a little overzealous at times, it basically locked me out of all my internet stuffs thinking it was doing a good job. Hence the switch to Zone Alarm.

i use hardware firewall now(so that i dont have to spend on software everytime)...

Well the simple answer is no.

Lets say you download a program or pickup something online by accident. A hardware firewall (like my router has) will keep out network probes and hopefully hide the ports from the 'outside Internet'.

But lets say that program you downloaded is malicious virus/trojan. Your hardware firewall is not going to keep that piece of software from calling home. Unless your virus protection catches it first.

This is where the software firewall helps you. It monitors both traffic coming in to your computer from the network and connections leaving your computer that you did not consent.

Both of which are great. I use Sygate. And both have free versions for personal use. Don't let Back orifice or Sub7 take advantage of you .
