cant get the facet of strength to use gladiator defense.

any tricks/ways to make this stupid thing use the skill?

It uses it every time, you don't see it because it's a stance. Just keep trying to capture, if you don't get it then move to break the spell. That's how I did it and it didn't take me long at all.
