Reason
I am a player who currently have stop playing GW1, but is deeply following the news of GW2. There are lots things in there (shown so far) that link back to the old, especially for the Charr race. In it, many of the former Ascalon NPC are now turn to enemies, and much of the war store line carries over. HOWEVER... I don't remember any of those NPC (beside Gwen and Prince R). so I think it could use some strengthen up.
Idea
Would like to see an addition of mini expansion on reworking the Ascalon area. (mostly Sear, but maybe Pre too). This include rewrite certain quest, as well as adding or expanding certain questlines. Add more lore reference (like scatter of historical books, journal, plaque, tablet, etc). And make NPC more memorable (with adding of voice dialog and personality too, like you might see Duke Barradin's grand-kid or something). Also can have lots "unanswered" story line that lead to, or hint at, into GW2. (like you might have a quest to get a special rock to help build Duke's statue, etc)
Goal
Yes, I know, it would require some more work to put into an aging game (granted will mostly use existing asset). However, I see several benefit to it. For one, it get many player want to come back and return to GW1. They can use the hype of GW2 (in news and such) to mention about this expansion, which might get older player back into GW1, as well people who never played GW1 wanting to try it out. And on a flip side of that, it might get GW1 player more interested in GW2, and increase the sale there. I think it would have many benefit in term of Marketing and minor boost in sales, as well as make player happy.
Revitalization of Ascalon

Well.. to me.. if the goal is to sell more games (be it GW1 or GW2), adding more Ascalon content would be the best choice. Since you are able to bundle it with the GW2 hype train, so that in the media exposure, can put a word or two about "...this new free update in GW1 to help link the past to the future, etc etc dynamics event, etc...."
However, this need to be within a limited time frame (before GW2 comes out... so maybe... within next 4-6 month or so?) to have a maximum effect. (or even couple with some Steam sale, and reveal of the last class?)

I'm afraid Shady is right, we have WoC in Cantha right now, and they still have another 2 chapters of that to put in, untill those 2 chapters are seen, any other content of the sort wont come I think. And Elona is next in line, skipping Elona would be... well... odd imo.
I would absolutely love an Ascalon chapter in Beyond too, might be expecting something a bit different from just rewriting old quests, but even if that would be all... yes I'd play through it.
All the Beyond content really is what you say "a free update to help link the past to the future" kinda thing... the whole point of the Beyond stuff is to fill in some of the lore that explains certain conditions we will meet in GW2

The argument about low level area holds no value...I could ask then why they didn't make stuff around droknar forge...
It's more likely about the easy access outposts such as Lions arch, kaineng center and Kamadan offer , because it's the first outpost you get in when you switch ...
And anyway, i don't believe they will change their plans ..

While I would love to see Ascalon getting some love, I don't see it being done sadly
Like it's been said, after WoC we're gonna have some elonian chapter of Beyond.
I despise nf just like many people despise proph and I would willingly trade elonian chapter for ascalonian one
But it's not gonna happen.
If we don't have gw2 by the time it's out however, then /signed for post-sear Ascalon content!

I like the idea of revitalizing Ascalon but I don't think you could do it with the existing map. Maybe if they expanded the known map that would be awesome. There is plenty of space on the original Ascalon map to use but I suspect that will never happen not only for their resources but I am not sure how you would combat the issue with cartographer titles etc.
Maybe it could be done similar to an EOTN type situation. I for one would rather see this then more content in Elona. For me Nightfall was the worst campaign. Again I think it is a great stretch unless for some odd reason they decide to pump a bunch of resources back into GW
