The reason you farmed is because:
1) You're bad at the game in that cannot make money without farming in such a crummy manner. I mean, I don't farm, yet I've always had money to buy a shed load a nice armour and weapons, so that sort of farming isn't necessary.
2) You're bad at the game and believe that having lots of money you don't need will make you good. It doesn't.
I am slightly skeptical about these two comments, in fact they are poor assumptions and just about downright wrong. Farming doesn't mean you're a bad player, it's just the most time efficient way of making money in terms of PvE rewards, and therefore "wastes" less time than making money from dungeon rewards or another alternative.
Also, as someone else has previously suggested, I doubt you have been able to buy a "shed load of nice armour and weapons" without farming, unless you powertraded, which definitely requires no gameplaying skill (please note i have nothing against power-trading, it is my own natural game strategy

), only natural flair for trading and striking deals, or you have spent a lot of time on the game and played lengthly and regularly, in which case this only reinforces the point that farming is done because of efficieny in cash making.
I also have to disagree that having lots of money/valuable items doesn't make you "good", because of course in a sense it makes you good, it just does not however neccesarily reflect your ability to complete quests or win PvP battles.
To answer this threads question, what I can say about why farming was so popular is because, in guild wars, the level cap is low, so items and material (or pixel) wealth was the main way of showing your experience and percieved to be proof of your ability to play the game well, which is not untrue.
And yes I agree with Xsiriss that just playing the game in general should be more rewarding, as you amass about 40k for completing a whole campaign whereas farming yielded, and still can yield, more in an hour. This is just my personal opinion, but I think that PvP rewards should be greater, although I see it wouldn't really be worth it with a game which is rapidly deteriorating, so maybe GW2 will grant my wish.
My work here is done
