Oh, ha-ha, another conspiracy poster...
Seriously, why do people think the doom & gloomers are better than Fanboys again?
Too much from gw2?

i think some people are expecting far too much from this game.
my worry is, that with this pressure from the GW community, ANet will cave and produce some lame WoW copy where the emphasis is on the grind, rather then the game, as opposed to sticking to their original GW concept, which, for me, is the best MMO around by miles. |
I do expect it to be a good game, but with things I've read of it, I'm waiting to see more before I decide if I'll even bother.
But it's a game people have been anticipating for quite a while, so yeah people will be hyped for it...though with so little new info, it's hard to stay hyped.

I will admit, I have high expectations for GW2. I love(d) GW1. It was a beautiful series of game, very fun, kept me occupied for years. I was sheltered by its casual atmosphere. I would always come back to GW1 instead of WoW or any of those Korean grinding games because GW1 was storyline-centric, fast-paced (for the most part), had little-to-no grind (well, Prophecies-era, at least), free...: it didn't feel like a chore to me. I could ditch it for a couple of months, pick it back up, and be on my way again.
So of course, I'm apprehensive on how they will make GW2, especially when it sounds so much (from the little information that we have) like they're ditching [some of] their original premises and making it more like the generic MMO/WoW competitor. I try to imagine it as free-roaming as Prophecies, but with all the [not optional] grind they started adding in since Factions and accumulating into EoTN, I'm wondering, "Oh God, what will they do for GW2?" (on top of them already making it drastically different anyway with like, high level caps and whatnot).
I really do hope they make GW2 as great as--no, even better than--GW1. I have high expectations for them on that issue, because I DID fall in love with GW, and not generic MMO #72, and it kind of saddens me that they do this. I guess I'll just have to wait for more information, if I'm still around if it ever comes out. I hope that GW2 doesn't turn into another generic MMO, but half of me is rather pessimistic.

No one has ever said that the only thing we will see before the release is Lore, when have you ever seen a game released in the entire history of games that has only released lore before the proper release of the game?
(There might actually be one or two, I dunno, I don't claim to know every game released, my point still stands though, that would be an incredibly stupid marketing decision, no one in their right mind would do this.) |
Look, we all know the basic mechanics are going to change. We know that.
But is the level 20 cap what made Guild Wars so popular? Some would say yes, and those people probably aren't going to buy GW2 on general principle.
I would argue the mechanics are not the sole reason a game is successful or not. It may be part of the reason, but not the only reason.
No, Guild Wars was successful because it was the first MMORPG with a real story... a beginning, middle and end story, with not too much BS in between.
That's what made Guild Wars really unique, what really propelled you to get to the next mission to find out what happens next.
Now, am I saying the stores were perfect? No, of course not, Factions was too predictable, and Nightfall was too long, IMO.
But, IF ArenaNet can translate the basic feeling of Guild Wars, that certain "essence of being" that is so hard to describe, it will be a great game.
In the end of the day, people don't play games because of the mechanics. They play games because they get into the world, they want to explore, they want that new weapon or ability or whatever, they, in a word, want.
And the mysterious ability to create that "want" is what keeps driving game developers to keep making games.

Oh, and I'm (doom and gloomy) not thinking I'm better than you (fanboy?)
The thing is, I don't like the "it will be done when it is done" position anet took.
Stating that the game will have this and that, and bears shooting lazers from their azzes is just creating a huge hype that in one way or another is going to let down some people, and thats inevitable.
And to make it worse there's the fact that we don't even get to see a screenshot, a teaser or something. And I know that a screenshot means nothing (duke nukem forever anyone?), but it still will give some peace of mind to some people.

I'm cynical, I've said myself GW2 could suck. It's a big departure from Guild Wars, who knows if it will have the same elements that I like?
But to basically say that Guild Wars 2 will never come out, that it's just a big joke by Anet... well, in order to believe that, you have to believe that NCSoft is just dumb. And I don't think NCSoft would have promoted Mike O'Brien if he was just pulling a stunt.
As to why say "it's ready when it's done..." well, Hello!, standard industry practice! Same thing Blizzard does, nobody gets mad at them about it, fans know it takes time to make good games.
Declaring GW2 as vaporware is a cheap shot, and frankly, an accusation I'm getting tired of. Offer some proof that ArenaNet is engaged in a conspiracy, or else save your time and add something useful to the conversation.

The irony is that I heard recently that alot of things are still under consideration for GW2. I think the way GW1 has been handeled since Anet went on to GW2 proves that we should expect the bare minimum and a shitty game from them.
Until I see proof that Anet has their act together, no matter how good GW2 LOOKS, I will not buy it. I'm not falling for their eye candy bait-and-switch again. GW1 showed me personally that a good game can quickly become a crap game with bad management and updates.
dont mean to sound like a total obsessive geek but here it goes....
as far as gaming goes for me it was grand theft autos and football manager games......playing guild wars for 3 1/2 years has changed the way i play games and ive loved every moment of it....
so for me ive never ever been more excited about a game in my life and i reckon it will be amazing.....AMAZING

I have very high expectations of GW2. I think back to how great GW1 was when it first released, and how much they got done in just 1.5 years (Factions and Nightfall). Then they doubled the team size and have been silently working on GW2 for a while now.
5 years will have passed, and a lot more is now known about what things work and don't work in MMOs, and how people actually spend their time playing, so there's plenty of opportunity to fix design mistakes from GW1, avoid pitfalls other games have fallen into, and innovate with some new stuff. Also, they are supposedly investing a lot in their content creation tools, so hopefully they can crank out the content a lot faster in GW2.
If GW2 isn't good, I'm probably done with the MMO genre for a while. I just can't stand these uninspiring generic games coming out these days (hi Aion).

I believe it is very difficult for Anet to please everyone, what information we have does not inspire any confidence that made GW1 what it is (yes it needs a lot of support, updates still and less grind). My expectations for GW2 is that it will fail to excite or interest me the way GW1 did and still does, and I find that very disappointing.
Recent events in communicating information, issues and updates for GW1 give me the impression that these important things will remain the same for GW2, and for that I really find it difficult to get excited about GW2.
When I heard about GW2, when they announced it I was really hyped about it, but the companion, the ability to jump/swim and recent pay to purchase features update provide little if any compelling reason to want to be involved with this brand beyond GW1.
GW2 will be far too different in any event for my tastes. So chances are I will look to other games like D3......

i hope i am wrong, and that GW2 will be as unique when it is released, as GW1 was when that was released.
