See, I feel ArenaNet are missing a trick here.

With all the worry over hacked accounts and fear of losing all your characters I have a, frankly, genius money sink for people who want to "insure" their characters.

I propose the installation of a Xunlai Insurance Agent NPC. One to be placed in The Kodash Bazaar, one in the Harvest Temple, one in Droknar's Forge, and one in Heroes' Ascent. Through this NPC you can save everything you own and all your characters. Naturally, there would need to be different levels of cover:
  • Basic Insurance - Charged at 1000 gold per character on the account - This covers your Characters' Names, the one set of armor they are currently wearing, and the outposts they have unlocked along with their quest logs, and skills bought/capped.
  • Core Insurance - Charged at 3000 gold per character on the account - This covers you for all of the above, along with title progress.
  • Premium Insurance - Charged at 5000 gold per character on the account - This covers you for all of the above (Core and Basic) including all of those characters' inventories.
  • Comprehensive Insurance - Charged at 5000 gold per character on the account, and an additional 15,000 gold, this insurance covers you for all that covered by Premium Insurance, as well as covering the entire contents of your Main Xunlai Storage box, including materials tab.

Further to that above, ALL characters on the account would be insured - it should not be possible to pick and choose single characters. Furthermore, you can only insure your progress / items on a maximum one-monthly basis. This would stop people doing so after completing every mission (though the pricing could be set so that it was obscenely expensive to do so)

On being "hacked" and losing items etc... ArenaNet would need to be contacted, and only they would have the power to reinstate the account (after investigation) under the terms of the "insurance coverage", as it was at the point of insuring it.

Ok boys and girls, pull this idea apart.

I like the idea, especially how so much people would be helped with this. But somehow I believe Anet won't put this to work since they claim account recovery = impossible.

If there could be some kind of check to see whether people didn't just delete them theirselves on purpose I'd fully agree with this.

/signed, simply because it would take away a lot of injustice in GW

Survivor title abuse?

and other abuses? You sell alot of ecto's move your money to your other account, claim you was hacked, and viola, you have doubled your fortune...

insure, sell, trade, report = insurance fraud = PROFIT.

works in games like EVE where "real" type frauds are permited (even encouraged) not in GW.

I actually like the idea in conept. It would need a LOT of failsafes. Not so sure about the prices, but I doubt Anet would ever do it anyway.

Personally, I've always wanted a Xunlai Stock Market.

Insanely hard to manage and investigate, and quite abusable too, I'm sure

I just felt it was a humorous suggestion, with some merit. I have no doubt that it would be difficult to implement.

personally i do like the idea but in truth they will not make it a reality but on that not to have the comprehensive insurance i would say it would have to be more then 20k some people have hundreds of ectos and the money sink personnaly would work better if they charge more 20k is not really that much
not to say that i am in the mood for another money sink

and i would like an insurance for trading more then for hackers
traders can have more of in impact on the game then hackers imo

I really believe this should be done with real money.

More money paid in = more money for ANet to use towards the game...hopefully...

Well, maybe in-game cash aswell...

Right now I'm not sure, I'll try to think later.

Or PlayNC and Anet can just get a real account protection system.

are you insane? if they could do it they would already.

and can you imagine the uproar if they actually started charging gold for it?

/should have been a way to lock characters from the start and to hell if i'd pay for it

It would be much more effective and efficient to improve account security.

Idealistic view: The root of the problem is hacking after all and I am not willing to accept hacking as something we have to live with and insure ourselves against.

Realistic view: We would probably all be better off if ANet invested its resources in improving GW2 security and design it so that toons/accounts/guilds may be rolled back individually after a security breach.

Why do you want to establish an ingame insurance system in the form of a goldsink anyway?

Shouldn't account security be a standard feature of the product leaving us our gold to be "invested" in shiny things?

It wasn't an entirely serious suggestion to be honest, though, it was more suggesting that a system to save and record the progress of accounts is required.

Yes, Yes it should.

Shame ArenaNet doesn't seem to want to implement such a "standard feature".

Well, this clearly isn't going to happen, but it would be great if it did

So wait, we have to pay for basic security 99% of all other MMO's have?

Makes sense...

/signed but without costs, being able to "lock" a character from deletion is something so basic, and GW lacks it, surprise surprise, and you're actauuly suggestion to pay for it?

Actually these ideas below would come in handy where Characters/account being maliciously wipe clean is concern.

Example 1
Example 2

I am thinking that players are allow to export their character statistic onto their own computer or onto GuildWars.com or arena net.com anywhere that is best for the game and its player, if you are unlucky to get attack, your "exported statistic" will then be sent to arena net for to retrieve your account as it was last "backup- exported statistic" back.

so a players would be wise to export their characters statistic and have a backup copy of that store in a cd or something.

no offence Celestial Beaver, but it should not be on the players shoulder to buy insurance when arena net have bad security measures.

A bad game you still play and take time to visit a fansite about to post in a discussion. Also considering there is, as of this moment, still no clear release date for the BETA or final product i'd say adding to GW is a viable option.

The last thing a developer wants to do is lose its playerbase before releasing a sequal to a game franchise. By adding more to GW they keep those players who have played since the release of GW till the release of GW2 and also draw in new players to increase the size of the community.

/signed for being a creative idea, although with flaws that i'm sure could be worked out. I have to say i still find it hard to believe what Regina said about players data being lost if an account has been hacked. I doubt its impossible to restore, but imagine that its a lot harder and time consuming and thus less beneficial to Anet. And considering there is no monthly fee for GW i doubt they really feel it justifies taking the time to restore an account. Not when they've already taken your money.

I think you should be able to insure customized items only, and it would work like the Festival Hats NPC. You can delete your insured customized item all you want, but it will always be there. Same with armor.

Combine this idea with someone else's thread about being able to "lock" a character (i.e. you can't delete it once it's locked into place) and I think we have more security.

I don't think there's a way to safely, without abuse, implement a system where all your shiny undead weapons or pets, or stacks of ectos will be safe, but something is better than nothing.

Give inventories and storages a PIN option.

Charge gold per PIN access, so only the stupid paranoid noobs will get to waste money.
