Ok, I stand corrected. I'll admit, I've never modded and don't know much about it. Only what I've seen others post on the subject.
So, since you can't create buttons, how did the Pre players create a GH button?

1) A camper who sat in GH back when Pre chars could enter their GHs.
2) A clientside .dat hack
3) A new glitch
4) A beautiful hoax

a.) Photoshop
b.) Only the GH But. texture
c.) None of the above as no one has ever seen a GH But. in pre-sear (as in, do we have any screenshots of this?)
Well, from the other pre-searing threads, we do know that Pre-searing has quite a few tomes floating around.
Multiple accounts of tomes in Pre.
People are using hard rezzes in Pre now.
Someone claimed to have seen a Flesh Golem in Pre.
Sudden influx of expert salvage kits in pre (not the charr salvage kits)
I don't know if the mini mallyx is real or not. Photoshop is a possibility, but since tomes are in Pre the it's very possible that mallyx is as well.
The GH glitch that existed long ago is old news. There have always been black market items in Pre due to that glitch. So why is there now a sudden influx of new items in Pre? It truly does sound like a new mod/hack/exploit has been discovered and is making the rounds in Pre. Perhaps it's not exactly a textmodded button to GH, but it's some way of reaching the GH.

Warning, pure speculation and ignorance ahead:
I could see it as possible. You would maybe need some kind of memory-capture to see what data the GW client sends out when you hit the GH button with another character (one who isn't stuck in Pre with an actual button). Then find a way to duplicate that data sent by use of a macro. That macro can be binded to some key, or a visual "button" either in-game or as a separate window, whatever. Now, whenever the macro is run, bam, any character currently in-game at the time, including those in Pre, are sent directly to the GH.
Purely speculation, of course. But I think it makes sense... It seems that instead of actually putting in code to prevent Pre- characters from going to the GH, they simply removed the button. Which means the way is there, you just need to "make a door".

This particular mod adds a "Goto Guild Hall" button to their interface so the Pre characters are able to go back and forth to their GHs freely. Thus bringing back tomes, expert salvage kits, minis, etc to Pre. A lot this this has been overshadowed by the Armbrace fiasco, but hopefully the developers will have time to do something about it soon. |
OK im no modder nor do i care to ever play Pre again, but with all the talk of modding and textures, is it feasible to say that the Guild Hall button is always there and its a texture mod ANET implemented for pre chars to make it go away, which means its already there you just cant see it, and could mod it to be shown again?
Im not saying i think its right to bring things into pre by an exploit. Exploits are bad period. But if it is only one person and only a mini mallyx i dont see banning the guy. Its not as though hes going to sell it in pre. But if people did sneak tomes in and other things in i hope the Ban axe falls on those whove done it.
One moer thing with the exception of skins, and somewhat better functionality i dont see why people would bring weapons to pre, unless they dont have the GOTY edition or the preorders from any game. I think the inventory full of /bonusitems is enough to choose from. But as someone already stated, if there is an exploit, some cant help but exploit it

Oh yeah, and I think the most Pre-breaking items would be tomes. Being able to get any skill, normal and elite, pretty much ruins Pre. Not to mention super-cheap pimping out (insignias, runes) and superior runes, etc. Pre- innocence lost, I guess.

This week just rocks!
Things keep getting better and better!
Seriously - hadn't had so much fun in ages and this is actually the first week (after months actually!) that I look forward to playing GW! Since you never know when the next thing will break out and it would be a shame to miss it!
Loving it!

I said it then, i'll say it now...allowing community modding is the biggest mistake Anet will ever make in the game. It was always on the cards that modding would go beyond simple retextures and exploits would be found.
GG Anet, reap what you sow.

I did report it to a-net also using the proper way.
And since i like Pre-Searing i cant stand that it's being poluted like this.

If the "Goto Guild Hall" action isn't checked on the server, then there are a number of ways that functionality could be invoked by hacks.
But the point of Guild War's strong server-weak client model was that it is really easy to check things on the server end and prevent them if they are not allowed.
Of course if they missed adding the check when they removed the button, it wouldn't be an easy problem to spot.
