Does Obsidean Armor still hold a place of respect and status cred?

I buy the armor (and items) that pleases ME, no matter what cost it is. If anybody else happens to like it, hey great. Having FOW armor or collectors armor means nothing to me in a group.

The only thing that ever made it stand out in my mind was that people would be willing to waste that much time on something so ugly, but to each his own.

to all the Fow bashers: beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
to all the people who think all people with fow got it on Ebay: no,just no.
Not that I am saying that owning fow gives your cred and status, met some pretty asshats wearing it(allong with tormented sword/shield ).

When the game first came out, I thought Obsidian Armor was pretty cool. It was rare to see and there was some respect for the person who had it. These days, however, it just isn't the same. With all the eBaying and stuff, you never really know if the person earned it or not. And it certainly doesn't mean they are a good player.

If you like it, get it. For me, personally, I only like one or two obsidian sets... the rest are ugly. There are much better armors out there for cheaper.

I love the "I think FoW is ugly" posts - the only thing they are contributing to is the poster's forum title.

Anyways. For some people, getting a full set of Obsidian armor still holds its merit. If it's special to you, Freeked, then by all means get it. If you think it looks cool, then yeah farm up for it! Those're the only two things that matter.

I agree.

I been playing for 2 years and for a long time I never considered getting FOW armor cause i didn't really like the looks of them compared to other armors. That doesn't mean I hate them, just personal tastes. But I still enjoy seeing people dressed in there FOW in towns. I don't care how they got it, its just fun to see, like mini-pets.

But then I saw the Dervishes FOW. It immediately called out to me "MUST HAVE". Now I also like the Rits, but I had too much fun with my first Dervish ( a lass ) and now I want FOW for my new one ( a lad ) just for me. I also want to complete Nightfall again since i had blast the first time.

But how to get it? Well before I took on this adventure I never did FOW or UW regularly. After Nightfall I found those two areas easier then it use to be me. Whenever we have favor I'm there to save all my ecto's and shards. Grab keys in hopes for a perfect Chaos Axe and found new life in the game.

I also dabble in chest running ( feels like gambling ) and solo farm ( great when watching tv ) and overall I been saving up for that one day I goto the Eternal Forgemaster.

I already got all my ectos, just need shards. But to me the adventure in getting it is a whole new game.

But I hate this talk about how because Ectos have dropped "anyone can get FOW armor". So what? Anybody can have anything in this game.

I always viewed rare and exspensive stuff as something fun for people to see, not a prestige thing.

If you want FOW armor for respect, then your're getting it for the wrong reason. If you think FOW armor exsists just to be viewed as prestige, then you're probably someone who couldn't save up for it and feel you should bad mouth those who have it.

Overall FOW armor means you saved up your cash, you went to the Eternal Forgemaster, and you bought armor you like.

Also since I like to have 2 sets of armor for my toons, I plan on getting the Primeval set for my Dervish too, one set being radient and the other with armor bonuses.

But hey, I just like to look cool when I'm killing stuff.

I like my few FoW sets I have, earned them back when I was in LBS. I love the designs on most of the FoW sets, but some people buy the armor just as a status symbol. I bought it because it looks good on certain sexes/classes. Fact is, on certain characters, it just looks idiotic. FoW is a status symbol indeed, one that symbolizes that a player is/was very wealthy. I am poor now, but I still have the FoW armor. Never assume that a player with FoW is wealthy... fact is, many save up just enough for it and then purchase it making them dirt poor. Some of the ultra wealthy have many many sets of FoW, and are still rich. Depends on how devoted you are to selling here on guru and in LA AD1 or how much real money you are willing to spend on ebay. In either sense, FoW armor means you had a lot of money at some point.

To those that were honest in their endeavor to get that money, congrats. To those that ebayed every red cent, shame on you. I may never have the funds to buy FoW armor again, and that is ok with me. All I want is a few sets of 15k from GW:EN and I will be happy as a clam.

Well, respect for stuff you can buy is always a dodgy thing. There are ways around it as usual...

And a lot of titles like survivor are easy to get now too if you know the trick.

I have always been a proponent for being able to gain something by completing some story lines and such and then getting a customised item for it, especially armour pieces.

It would mean a lot more if you actually had to do a series of quests, including some master difficulty quests and then gaining an armour set that way that cannot be bought, only earned. Or something to that effect. End game armour is a good idea as such but more things along that line can be done.

This. I don't really think anything when I see it. Some looks cool and some looks like a big waste of money/time/resources because I find it ugly.

As a person who got fissure for my male mesmer the hard way by farming months with my SS and pick up 55's, I totally think it's an armor of prestige. After busting my butt for 6 months doing so I'll never get another set I'm just glad i got it before the AI update where they scatter if more then 3 are getting pwned.

Also i guess it depends on personal taste - some of the fissure armors are butt ugly IMO. I just really wanted fissure for my mesmer because I didn't want a civil war outfit (only had prophecies at the time).

I don't really like the way it looks except for the paragon. Also not really a fan of black dyed necessarily. I pick armor that I think looks cool.

This is good to know. I never got the opportunity to earn Survivor on my monk (created her in beta and used the same character in prerelease event). So all these people who put respect into someone who has Legendary Survivor are only putting respect in people who potentially have a year less experience at the game.

Anyway, I have Obsidian Armor on my monk. I also have 14 other armor sets and a very strained storage. I fell in love with fow a long time before I got it, way back when I saw my first set in June 05.

I do love all monk armors, this is true. I don't really like most of the armor available to other classes except the female mesmer vabbian armor.

Imo, there are two reasons that someone should get Obsidian. First is that you like the way it looks and second is that it you think it will give you a feeling of pride once you earned it. Buying FoW armor to try to get others to respect you or to show off are foolish reasons. It's possible to get FoW with next to no knowledge of many aspects of the game since it can be obtained by either gold buying or simple grinding with a cookie cutter build, so it does not necessarily reflect that the player wearing it is 'skilled'. In a nutshell, don't judge a book by it's cover, even if it is a very schmancy special cover, lol.

I look at people bearing FoW armour and don't think anything of it because it's become so common. There are lots of clones. How many fat warriors with full FoW dyed black with a Tormented Shield do you see on a day-to-day basis? Or monks with full black (again) FoW and those goddamn buns?

How one obtains the resources is the crux of the arguement. I don't think highly of gold-buyers, so-called merchants or scammers wearing FoW because they, in my view, didn't put in the effort.

To all those with full male warrior black FoW: do you like it or are you doing in because it's the 'best' of the 'best'?

Armor is armor, nothing more.

I never respected anyone more or less if they had a FoW set or not. Like many before have said it's just a common thing now a days and even before then my opinion hasn't changed about it. I respect players who deserve it not simply because they have a FoW set or the likewise of high end items.

I bought FoW armors for my ele and necro just to have in my collection. The second I bought them, I just put them on a storage character and haven't used them since.
