If by "work" you mean "have no effect at all except wasting their energy and keeping enemies far away from them at all times", then yes.

honestly though i use mantra of recall to get the extra energy bonus. i just give my dunky a few low costing spells and 1 mid level spell. he knows to cast it before the battle so that he can get the energy bonus before starting the battle but in the heat of battle he does get caught up in battle healing so at times i have to manually tell him to use it.
