Making History in DoA... then ANet dropped the ball

Ok, so a group of us set out to do the impossible. We decided to do all four parts of the Mallyx the Unyielding quest in succession in one run. Partially because we were given a "tip" that it was somehow more rewarding.

And more rewarding it was!

So, it turned out that if you do the quests in succession, you get more gems from the end area chest. We got 1 Torment Gem each from the Ravenheart Chest that shows up after beating the Greater Darkness. Then 2 Titan Gems each from the Foundry Chest after beating the Fury, then 3 Margonite Gems after beating Lord Jadoth. (screenshots above for those last two areas.)

Then, ANet's bungled up such a sweet reward. We completed both quests in the Stygian Veil, our ranger Err 7ed and we prevailed still. We got to the Smothering Tendrils, we killed 2 of the six. Then the ENTIRE party got kicked because of Err Code 59.

For those unaware, Err Code 59 is the anti-farming/botting code that kicks out characters that have been on too long. At the point of being kicked we had been chugging at this for 11 hours. So, the game decided we were all bots and kicked us.

This turned the sweet discovery into a great amount of rage. For ANet's developers put a nice reward, then made it unattainable. If you do the quests in succession you get a treat, but we can't allow you to do them in succession, so yeah. Tough luck buddy.

Granted, we can perhaps fine-tune the run to say 10 hours and not take breaks or eat or drink or go to the bathroom, but come on ANet, this is ridiculous.

I don't think I'm ready to pour another 12 hours into this unless I get some confirmation that this won't happen again. Guild Wars is fun, but not THAT fun.

Sitting up all night into the morning to get an err 59 while on the brink of success has greatly made my christmas eve a bad one. ANet, fix this up pleaseeeeee.

Further verification, the mission map. We brought the Shard of Brilliance all the way from Ravengloom to Stygian

The boss was half dead...just needed about 10 more minutes. After staying in a zone for 10 hours, code 59 auto-boots. With a more coordinated group (and not playing half asleep), we could have cut a couple hours off the time, but it still sucks to have been that close. Assumingly the reward would have been 4 gems each for the last zone, but there may have been an additional reward.

Wow, if I am you, I would be pretty pee-off too. You definitely have a case there against Anet if you can provide more proofs or screenshots. Do you live in US? If so, doesn't everyone is US can sue anyone for not providing the service they advertised?

Wow, this sure is a discovery. Well done, alot of groups will usually give up after they complete one quest thats why it has not been found till now.

nice discovery, and altough its sad that happened near the end, i think it was rewarding itself to have gotten that far in one day and got that many gems

Quote: our ranger Err 7ed question, arent the reconnects working now? or they havent still been implemented?

they have that system to try and prevent something, this is the first time (i have seen on this forums) were a playing party has come across this, ANet might not have thought that players would try and take on the entire quest, maybe top 3 parts of the quest.

back on topic, if the rewards escalate this way, what about beggining at the middle (2 of 4 completed) then taking on mallyx, could that yield additional reward?

who knows, still nice finding

Reconnects work (I actually had to during Ravengloom), but if you don't do so in 10 minutes, the window to reconnect passes (the ranger was slow to reboot). I don't think there are any ties between consecutive quests and Mallyx since they are almost 2 different zones with different entry points. Perhaps completion of the 4th spawns the Ebon Citadel quest, but there was no indication from completion of the previous zones (all of us had all the quests completed already of course).

Game Experience May Change During Online Play. You can't sue for what happened. lol

Anyways sorry to hear that, that does suck. I'd be extremly pissed also... when does this err59 occur though? I spent 17 hours (well me and friend switching as we went to classes) on my character and never got kicked once... and I was farming.

I'm not sure when this error occurs, but the fact that we ALL error 059ed at exactly the same time - we were all on vent so there is no question about this - and that NONE of my other friends online at the time experienced it suggests to me that this is definitely NOT a coincidence, but a design flaw somewhere. 10 hours in DoA starting from Ravenheart Gloom is probably close to the mark. I said 12 earlier because there was another 2 hours or so that we spent getting set up, wiping the first few times etc..

As the note on Wiki says, the Err 59 boot takes place if you have been in a specific zone for 10 straight hours (idle or not does not make a difference). I have been on for 1 day plus 10 hours one time (game just says you have been on for 1 day) and not gotten kicked. Simply because I was doing different things.

The entire DoA is one zone (i.e. even though you can enter through the Foundry, the City, the Gloom or the Veil, you really enter the same explorable area). This is why we all got booted at exactly the same time, because we all entered the Gloom at exactly the same time.

Congrats on one hell of an attempt (that's something I wish I had been a part of!). I, myself, will also be REALLY curious to see if ANET will answer this, because, IMO, their anti-farming code punished you in the end (unfairly). If this is supposed to be an elite area, then, IMO, I'd have to view this code as a restriction on what was an amazing attempt. I'd be willing to bet that they never thought someone would try what your group did...

Why would ANet put a reward for something they think will never happen. A partial answer to this was that according to one Dev, they originally figured each DoA quest would take 1 to 1.5 hours to complete. Which, in my opinion, proves they never even tried this stuff.

The City and Gloom can be done in 1.5 hours, last night we only did the essentials in the Veil (when the Ranger dropped) so we got it down to 2 hours. However, we have not found a way to slim down the Foundry. It takes us 3 hours minimum if we are super efficient and fast. Just insane. So, that's 8 hours if you take no breaks and if you have perfect builds for each section (which we do not because we have one build for all 4, not a specific build for each). So, overall, just a crazy paradox.

While I haven't gone to DoA (yet), I wouldnt think that all groups would use the exact same builds to go there. If you attempt what this group did (which I'm STILL shaking my head at...congrats again!), you are almost forced to be perfect (knowing EXACTLY what you're doing, or have to do, right from the beginning) before that stupid code kicks in. It doesnt allow for group breaks to happen (i.e. bathroom), it doesnt allow your group to take some time to talk about how you're going to do the next quest---heck, what if they finished a quest, and just wanted to walk through the area killing everything?
They need to remove the code from this area...
