- All PvE character's start at level 0(or is it 1? can't remember.. LOL) and need to level up to level 20.
- PvP character's start at level 20 but without unlocking anything will only have a basic set of skills to use as well as no weapon/item/armor upgrades, runes, etc
- You can unlock these upgrades, runes, skills via Balthazar Faction, which you get by beating people in PvP. Or you can play through PvE and as you learn new skills or id new upgrades, runes, etc they will be unlocked for PvP play.

Both. A PvE (roleplaying) toon starts at level 1 and levels to 20. A PvP toon is instantly level 20 and has max gear.

The game isn't about grinding for levels though as a majority of the content is aimed at level 20 characters.

Okay well, For example.

Im playing PvE and get my char up to 20... then what?
can i take THAT SAME character, with all his abilities and skills and equipment and bring it to PvP?

You can also spend a few bucks in the online store on your PvP character to unlock all the skills....... if that's your preference.

For a PvE character once they get to level 20, there is always:

- Finish the storyline :P
- Go and cap all the elite's
- Gain more skill points (1 per 15K xp) and unlock every skill
- Gain titles like Tyria/Cantha/elona explorer/protector, etc
- go farm for gold
- Start collecting skins of weapons, focii, shields, etc that you like
- etc

And yes, you can use your PvE character in PvP.

Reaching level 20 is more of the beginning of the story than the end.

It doesn't appeal to those who want to continually "level", or for those who like bullying through superior gear/level advantage.

Having all max items and max level attainable puts the focus on skill with build making and play, with communicating and so on. You don't win in PvP by being 5 levels above a guy or having the uber-leet boots of butt-kicking, but by being better.

In PvE you do level up, but you get new skills throughout play, and thus you expand your repetoire. You can branch out and switch secondary as much as you want, until you have all 1000+ skills from the 10 current classes to choose from (for example, my ranger started as a ranger/monk, but often plays as a ranger/warrior, ranger/assassin, ranger/paragon - you can unlock many combinations for your characters, and play various roles that way). You can set your own goals or go for the ones ANet has set out for you (for example, survivor, cartographer and other such titles, including one for playing the game "drunk" (in-game alcohol making your view of the world dizzying.)

Basically, there's a lot to do, and it's not all about level, it's about what you do with it and how you play.

This game is... well, unique. Kind of like the retarded kid with the sunflower hat that likes to lick bar peanuts. The game is difficult... but mainly because the monsters are overpowered and travel in packs. You can play without parties, but you have to revert to henchies who eat half the drops you get making the whole thing quite pointless.

The game has about ten worthy weapon mods everything else is merchant food for all except the 2% who try to be innovative (and I applaud them for it). After a certain point the only thing that matters on the side of PVE is how weapons look. If you are into PVP then you can get through half of the PVE game and have everything you need stat wise. There are some elite skills you will have to play the whole (or most) of the game for, but, if you feel like you'll accomplish anything by doing it then you are wrong.

The experience you gain in pve can be used to buy skills for pvp, but if you like the latter then there is no reason (besides elites) to touch the pve since you can get everything else with points.

I've been playing this game since the Alphas and have started to just now realize how pointless it really is. You will enjoy the game at first- that is for sure. You will love it. Hell, i spent a weekend doing nothing but playing it.

Within a few weeks, however, you will find that there is absolutely nothing worth doing that is left to do. Sure, you can waste hours getting titles, but, why? So they can grant you the right to put a string under your name? Yeah you can do quests, but again, why? To buy skills? Out of the multitude of skills there are maybe 15-20 for each profession that will actually be used because people in this game will only follow pre-made cookie-cutter builds; who can blame them? There really is only one way to beat most of the areas, and if you're not in one of those ways, then you're screwed.

You will also go through a phase wondering what the difference is between a gold weapon and a purple weapon of the same stat and skin, guess what, nothing! People seem so desperate to get something out of the game that they turn to little things like those.

Something you will really find annoying is how the game prides itself on having no grinding and being open to the common player when it is so obvious that all this game does is present the same grind in a less fun and less obvious manner. Instead of spending ten hours farming rats- or whatever- you'll be killing the same boss with henchies for a week to get his green, but guess what, you have a less then a 3% chance of that happening because the henchies are stealing your loot. You can solo of course, but then you have to grind the cash to get the runes and skills for the one build that can do it solo.

That is what I have to say about guild wars. It is definetly a fun game, but it gets tedious. I still play it- surprisingly- I just feel this is something everyone should realize. Ultimately this was more for me to vent my frustrations with the game- I'm sorry.

Granted there is some grind in Guild Wars, but it is still fun trying to beat that one boss that decided that you taste pretty good. I have been known to go after bosses that have given me high DP (death penalty), just for the satisfaction of killing them. That is part of the challenge, beating the odds as they are stacked against you.

I have been playing for 11 months now, almost have 4k hrs on O.o and im not bored with it at all

Guild Wars offers you a variety of ways to play the game, each with very nice features to make it enticing to most players.

WoW features farming and grinding. That's it. Everything in WoW is either farmed or grinded out. You farm mats / money / items. You grind exp / honor / faction.

No one goes to Instances to "have fun" in WoW. They schedule Raids that last for hours and hours, usually with at least 2 people falling asleep at the keyboard or going AFK hoping no one will notice...only because they want to be there for the boss fight in the off-chance that a set piece or class item might drop that they have enough DKP for.

In Guild Wars, you can run Tombs, UW, FoW or DoA. For fun. Since items are easy to come by, you don't feel like you have to do something over and over and over again in order to be a better player. This is because GW isn't 100% dependent on gear like WoW is.

In summation: GW > WoW, all day.

Unless you like to show off.

What's the point of life? Converting matter into more people? Nearly everything is pointless. Play to have fun.

By your logic, every game is pointless. Counterstrike? Kill people. Again and again. Chess - invest hours to either win or lose, with the outcome being potentially being decided long before the final moves. Etc...

But seriously This game can get tedious/boring/wtfe but What makes it great for those of us that do get periodcaly bored is being able to not play for a few weeks/months/days and then come back and still have their characters..all their golds/shiny stuff what have you and not be out any money due to monthly fees.
