Character Sketches

A few sketches of characters that I drew.





I have just recently have taken up drawing, so I'm not the best, but tell me what you think.

Pretty good sketches for starters, and I can understand some of the pencil smears too.

I rly like em, wish i could draw nearly as well as that. If you think about doing commisions let me know.

Well, if you want to post some pictures of one of your characters I'm willing to draw it.

Only thing i see thats even remotely close to wrong in those is the arm of the warrior, they're a tad bit skinny, but aside from that i think they're nice for first times 8) better than anything i can do

Watch where you place your hand next time.. to make it less Smurgy.

It's rather impressive to see someone just starting to draw and already getting into using shadows and such. Your hands look a bit small to me, and for that matter so do your heads.. though Im not sure if thats just a personal style. What might help in that is thinking about hands being relativly the same size as a face when opened out.. and heads are about half the width of the shoulder-span. (Or atleast on me! That sorta stuff varies on the subject of course) Good job! keep it up

That's very impressive for someone who has just started drawing. The only thing you need to work on that draws my attention (as in, isn't trivial detail) is the face... You've got the basics but you just need a little more practice to get them properly the first time (I can see the smudging from your pencil eraser a fair bit in that area).

Draw from the top left to the bottom right if you are left handed, and the top right to the bottom left if you are left handed, ^^

or at least move in that direction.

Some hints:

Get better paper. Youd be amazed how much better things look on nice smooth bristol...
Get better pencils. I myself never use anything user than a H or an F.
Get better eraser.

Find a nice comfortable place to draw and let the creativity come out ^_^

whats an h or f pencil, maybe i know but probably never knew what it was? i dunno. link please!

I see you noticed my troubled area lol. I have a lot of problems with drawing faces currently. Also have my fair share of problems with hands.

Find a nice comfortable place to draw and let the creativity come out ^_^ Better paper, hmm. I guess a 5 dollar sketch book isn't good enough. Better paper would help. The paper I use right now doesn't handle erasing that well.

Better pencils would probably help me too. Right now I just have a mechanical pencil I found in my house.

And on that mechanical pencil is one of the worst erasers ever. Better eraser is another thing I could use.

Guess its time for me to go drawing supplies shopping.

Hey, youre faces are already showing improvement Good job.

H pencils use harder graphite leads and are lighter than the softer B pencils. F I have no clue. My favorite erasers are kneading, they don't leave residue and cleanly remove graphite traces. To prevent smearing, keep a piece of paper over the drawing under your hand.

Dang that looks real nice, Thx a lot. Now i can draw nothing more then a stick figure so im rly amazed now rly nice job on the face and a lot of those extra details in the armor. Looks rly in proportion. Thx again

A few tips on shading, since you attempted it, and this is information that's helped me a lot over time:
Remember no not shade *only* around the lines. Learn how to imply form using shading instead of lines. For example: Shade in the kneecap, don't outline it. Or, similarly, shade in the abs of a character to add depth, for only shading near your lines made characters appear flat.

PS: Remember in real life, there's backlighting almost everywhere, and shading near a line, but not quite on it, can give the illusion of backlighting ^_^

F is a lead hardness, it stands for "fine", its for very fine lines.
H is also a lead hardness stands for "hard"

Harder pencils leave much much lighter lines, which is very good if your style requires a lot of erasing, because you will have very light lines to erase. Later on you can go back and retrace some lines with a 2B-3B pencil.

I use bristol pad exclusively when im drawing something i want to keep. Its very very hard and thick paper, almost more like cardboard. It takes pencil and inks REALLY well. Its also more expensive per page but definitely worth it. When im just mucking around or making ideas, i use cheap cheap composition notebooks from the 99 cent store (you know...cheap notebooks with lines).

I useually draw in my Academie Sketch Portfolios if it's an honest sketch, or just computer paper if it's a doodle. If I plan on doing a truly serious piece, I'll useually sketch a draft first, then use *good* paper for the final.
Mostly, though, I find I just CG most of my work, so traditional media gets the back seat : ) *hugs his tablet*
