More likely than not, guilds won't be able to form alliances in Nightfall just as players are unable to access materials storage in Prophecies.
In order to start up or join an existing alliance, a guild must align itself with the Luxons or the Kurzicks. This means that unless the guild leader owns Factions and can reach Cavalon or House Zu Heltzer to pay for the guild's allegiance, the guild won't be able to join any alliances.
I have to admit that guild alliances are one of the nicer features in Factions, even though they are tied to the horrible faction farming. Judging by past experience ANet has no intention of extending the alliances' functionality beyond Factions, which means that guilds won't be able to form alliances unless someone in the guild owns Factions and can take over the leadership position.
Though they are very useful, my assessment is that guild alliances won't have any "in-game support" in the sense of town control in Nightfall. There will still be many guilds who choose to expand themselves beyond single-guild limits through the alliance mechanic, but alliances based on town control and faction farming will fall to the wayside, much like the donation titles.
Again, this is just the way I see it happening based on past experience.

different states in nightfall? oh great >.> the whole kurzick/luxon thing made me puke at some point (abuse anyone? wts leecher 1k a piece >.> lets not forget 'spys' and all the crap that is going on >.>) i really hope this will NOT be the case for nightfall. imo there shouldnt be a use for alliances but factions, else it isnt really unique anymore. the only deal with it is to have a bigger community which will make your gameplay better..or worse, depending on the alliance. >.> on a note..ill randomly guess that the alliances are going to be kinda useless anyways.
look at it;
proph after factions came out = pretty much empty for many parts, all playing factions
factions after nightfall will come out = what the current prophecies will be like. most missions will be dead, the amount of alliance battles played will go down, alliances that own outposts or downs will lose massive amounts of faction due to their FFers playing nightfall..etc >.>
(wondering what will happen to proph at some point >.> its probably gonna die even more :|)

posted by MelechRic Personally, I hope Alliances are dead and gone in Nightfall. If not, it will be the last chapter of GW that I buy. I find Faction farming and Alliances in general to have a very detrimental effect on the overall metagame. (Just my opinion.) |
I was farming amber for some monk armor (kurzak) and I was in a great Faction farming Group. (They were farming for their alliance I was for amber) We started off as a 3 man team grew to 5 with each having a role. We were collecting about 10k faction an hour each using our method. For 2 hours we repeated out process and got to know each other well. Things were fine until an officer of their Guild showed up. He was outraged at them for consorting with someone who was not with their alliance. He told them to drop me off at town or be expelled from their Guild. I was outraged! Since when do pubesant so-called officers from some where tell people who and who cannot play a game?! They apologized and said they would drop me off at town....
This is not the first time this has happened. Alliance based town ownership killed the video game star. The Faction system is nice but should not be a determination on who owns a town. Town ownership should be determined by one Alliance kicking the butt of some other Alliance in a GvG style game; or an Alliance Battle style game. At least that method shows 1337 skills. The current method shows no talent at all.
I agree with GloryFox. The current system is sooo messed up. Anyone can go faction farming, just make your secondary assassin so you don't get hit by crippling anguish by the bridge. I think ownership of towns should be given to those who do the best in just alliance battles or special missions and faction is for extra perks, like say every 1k faction earns you 1k gold.
Well it's good to have an alliance if you're the type of guild that wants to be able to scrimmage with other guilds to practice or just have a larger community of allies to ask for groups for. From what I hear though people are often complaining about how stupid other guilds in their alliance are :P
H
It's not alliance that's the problem, it's the township control and faction farming that's the problem. In my alliance, ppl are nice to each other and will always try to help each other out, like whenever there's manpower shortage for gvg or mission. Making friends and helping each other is what alliance is all about, so if your alliance doesn't do that, it's time to ask your leader to switch to a more friendly one. Just like a guild, alliance is a fine idea, it's people that are sources of the problem.
So yea, I'd love to see alliance system kept alive in Nightfall, as well as alliance battle, just wish more improvements can be done to them.

I don't see the problem with Alliances UNLESS its tied to some weak system like Faction Farming for points.
Keeping Alliances while ditching the faction crap only allows for big groups with similar interests to keep in touch and play together without breaking previous ties...and relying on the weak friends window.
I hope Alliances have no use in it. Oh, imagine some kind of uber alliance. Ally of the Kurzicks AND some Elonian district. That would be ridiculous.
IMO, Factions was stronger in PvP (events, alliances, etc), and Prophecies was stronger in PvE. Of course, I favor PvE and Prophecies over Factions in many ways. Oh. Instead of alliance battles, how about make Nightfall's battle-type addition, duelling? I've wanted that for some time. 1 on 1, not GvG or anything.
Medieval Europe, Asia, then Africa. I just hope they don't keep up with this continent idea. I have a feeling Ch 4 will be antarctic...oi!!!
